Cost and efficiency are still important considerations for companies as they embark on digital transformation. Companies can achieve cost efficiency if they have and invest in the right technology resources according to their needs and without a lot of unnecessary additional costs. In 2023, based on Forrester’s 2023: Cloud Computing, cloud technology will still be a top priority for the majority of organizations worldwide. In addition, the survey found that controlling cloud costs will be a top priority for IT executives. This is also what DGW Group will focus on to accelerate their digital transformation initiatives.
Bastian Sulistiyo, Information Technology Manager of DGW Group, revealed that since moving to the AWS cloud with the help of deployment services (install & configure) from PT. Central Data Technology (CDT), an AWS Advanced Partner, DGW Group has been able to reduce costs and increase efficiency by up to 34.93%.
DGW Group is a supplier of agricultural products and solutions consisting of several business units focused on agrochemicals, fertilizers, seeds, agricultural equipment and distribution. Since its establishment in 2001, the company has relied on an on-premises infrastructure to support business operations and customer service. However, as the business grows and the number of customers increases, this IT infrastructure is no longer able to meet DGW Group’s needs, and they need to migrate to the cloud to overcome these challenges.
Budget Cost Efficiency and Technology Optimization with AWS Cloud
The limited IT budget did not prevent DGW Group from adapting and implementing its digital transformation, and after migrating to AWS Cloud, it achieved a cost efficiency of up to 34.93%. The cost efficiency of the budget by the cloud does not lie in the cost savings achieved the first time the technology is used, but rather in the continuous optimization of the budget over a long period of time. This is closely related to the conversion of CAPEX to OPEX.
By using the cloud, capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX) can be reduced to be more efficient. In addition, by using AWS Cloud, the procurement of assets can be eliminated, so that only the operating costs are incurred, through the pay-as-you-go model. In this way, DGW Group only pays for the cloud products and services it uses, according to the capacity of the services it needs.
Bastian Sulistiyo, Information Technology Manager of DGW Group, said that modernizing IT infrastructure by migrating to the cloud has become an important need to help businesses adapt faster. DGW Group needs an environment where all IT needs can be operated reliably with guaranteed SLAs, yet cost effectively, to achieve the company’s goal of improving customer experience and streamlining business processes.
With the support and cooperation of PT Central Data Technology-an advanced partner of AWS-for migrating to AWS Cloud since May 2022, the use of AWS Cloud offers DGW Group convenience in terms of scalability, operational and budget efficiency, security, and flexibility. In addition, AWS cloud has a competent reputation for managing open-source technology in enterprise-grade cloud solutions.
“Moving to the AWS cloud native environment, which offers flexibility, allows our systems and infrastructure to scale gradually and start small,” the support provided by CDT as a qualified expertise in AWS technologies, helps DGW Group to be able to run services on AWS securely and reliably in an effective and efficient cost,” said Bastian.
Increase Flexibility and Efficiency with Process Automation
DGW Group can now easily increase computing capacity and scalability to meet business needs in a flexible and efficient manner that was not possible when using on-premises IT infrastructure. CDT helped DGW Group implement Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) snapshots to automate the process of backing up data generated by daily applications and websites running on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances.
To adapt to high traffic and prevent slow servers, DGW Group uses Elastic Load Balancing, which automatically distributes traffic to its websites and applications. It is also supported by the use of AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service, which is used to automate the deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications.
Monitoring and Improving Security
Since moving to the AWS cloud, DGW Group has also noticed a lack of security-related issues from both internal circles and customers. CDT helped DGW Group implement the AWS Web Application Firewall (AWS WAF) to filter common web-based attacks. It also used the AWS Certificate Manager service to manage the complexity of creating, storing, and renewing certificates to protect its websites and applications. To monitor applications and track user activity, DGW Group uses Amazon CloudWatch and AWS CloudTrail.
“To achieve operational excellence, there are still many IT-related issues we need to address, such as application development, servers, networks related to cyber-attack issues, and disaster recovery. This is one of our main focuses to improve customer experience and streamline business processes,” said Bastian.
By applying best practices with AWS cloud services, DGW Group’s cybersecurity standards meet global standards. This makes DGW Group ready and alert to face various cybersecurity threats.
In terms of the future IT development roadmap, Bastian said that the successful migration to AWS Cloud encouraged DGW to evaluate the SuperApp development that has been carried out. “We will gradually change the architecture of the SuperApp development framework from monolithic to more modern, cloud-based microservices. This will make deployment faster and more automated,” said Bastian.
